How To Improve Your Sleep
I’ve been working on improving my sleep lately as I’m realizing more and more how important it is to creating better results in all areas of my life. Sleep is the ultimate biohack and it’s absolutely free. And many times our mental, emotional, and physical challenges arise because of poor sleep habits. What’s great is that you can fix the problem simply by improving your sleep.
When I interviewed, Kristen Holmes, the VP of data science from Whoop on the Peak Humans Podcast she said the most important thing was keeping a consistent bed time / wake time. Most people are inconsistent at this and it drastically affects their sleep.
Here are a few other key strategies from Dr. Peter Attia’s new book Outlive, I am putting into practice:
Stop eating three hours before bed.
Stop looking at screens two hours before bed. I try to keep my phone out of my room in a box.
Give yourself more sleep opportunity. This means you want to get in bed with enough time to get adequate sleep. If you sleep from 10pm to 6am that doesn’t mean you are getting 8 hours of sleep. You probably get 7 hours of sleep as it takes time to fall asleep, there are times during the night you wake up, and a majority of your sleep is light sleep rather than REM and deep sleep.
Some of my favorite tools to improve my sleep are:
Whoop to track my sleep and see how much REM and deep sleep I get.
Face mask to make it dark.
Ear plugs.
Blue blocker glasses to reduce the junk light at night and increase melatonin levels.
Getting good at sleep takes practice. It has taken me months to get my sleep dialed in and the rewards are noticeable. I wake up easier with more energy and alertness and perform at a peak level each day. The ability and gift our body has to repair itself/heal physically and make mental improvements/learnings overnight while we are unconscious is a superpower. I urge you to tap into it more.
Have a great weekend,
